Conditions for including a journal in the Web of Science

Including a journal in WoS

Formal requirements of the journal, publication standards

  • The aim and scope of the journal is clear at first glance
  • Ideally the full text, or just the bibliographic data in English:
    • article titles,
    • key words,
    • abstracts,
    • references
  • Level of peer review
  • Adherence to periodicity, undelayed publication (proof of reliability, ability of the editorial board to provide enough quality articles in time)
  • Low percentage of self-citations (often a maximum of 20% of self-citations are accepted)
  • Compliance with international publishing conventions:
    • an apt title of the journal and articles, relevant abstracts
    • complete citations
    • listing all authors with their contact details (affiliation, e-mail)

Formal requirements of articles

  • Relevance of the topic and its contribution to the field
  • Scientific articles, not reports, summaries, or newsletters
  • References in the Roman alphabet
  • Complete bibliography

Content requirements

  • Thematic uniqueness of the journal
  • Does the journal bring new content to WoS?
  • The journal is compared with journals listed in WoS in the given subject category and with other applicants
  • Comparisons are made within a given subject category

Diversity

  • The international influence of the journal
    • the more international authors, editors, editorial board members, the better
    • the tendency for the authors and editorial board to be an internationally prominent scientific community in the field
  • Regional journals
    • international representation is not necessary for a regional journal, but at least coverage by experts and authors from the country concerned
    • the chances of acceptance are increased by the expansion of the scope of the journal and the involvement of experts from all over the country, or cross-border cooperation

Citations

  • Journals with some history: calculate basic metrics (IF) and consider where the journal would fit in the category
  • New journals: analysis of previous publications, citations and affiliations of authors and editors

Specifics for electronic journals

  • The same criteria as for printed journals
  • Compliance with basic publishing standards
  • Easily find basic information about journals, articles, authors
  • Journals published in single issues:
    • easy identification of the following data: journal title, year of publication, volume, number, article title, page number or DOI, names and addresses of author(s), content
    • regular and timely issue
  • Journals published on a continuous basis (e.g., portal)
    • the regular appearance of articles (i.e., not random)
    • easy identification of basic publication data

Printed journal application procedure

In order to apply for inclusion in WoS, the current issue and two subsequent issues must be sent to Clarivate Analytics at the time of publication. Submitting issues for evaluation is the responsibility of the journal's editorial board!

It is not possible to send the last three issues back for evaluation. The following accompanying information must be sent with the first copy:

  • Journal title
  • ISSN
  • Name and address of the publisher or editor
  • Brief summary of the journal's importance to the field and its main advantages over other journals in the field

Electronic journal application procedure

In the case of an e-journal, just give Clarivate Analytics access to the full text and they will track the publication of articles or the publication of future issues of the journal themselves.

If the journal is published in single issues, it is always a good idea to notify Clarivate Analytics when the next issue is published. It is not possible to evaluate the last three issues retrospectively. At the same time, you must complete the form on the Clarivate Analytics website.
