Conditions for inclusion in the Web of Science
Proceedings published in a journal
If the journal is already included in WoS, the proceedings are automatically included in WoS. If the journal is not included in WoS, the rules for inclusion in WoS apply.
Separately published proceedings
Clarivate Analytics is in contact with some of the most prestigious institutions that organize professional conferences and/or publish proceedings. Therefore, proceedings from some conferences are excerpted much faster than others. Proceedings from repeat conferences are NOT normally automatically included. It is necessary to request inclusion of each proceedings separately.
Annually, Clarivate Analytics can only rank 12,000 proceedings. However, the number of requests is around 100,000 titles a year.
The criteria for the proceedings are very similar to the criteria for including a journal in WoS.
Formal requirements
- Similar to the criteria for journals
- The proceedings must contain the full texts of the papers, not just the abstracts
- Compliance with: pagination, timeliness of publication, compliance with international publishing standards
- 3 details are required in English: the title, abstract, keywords
- Full papers must be peer-reviewed and this information must be included in the proceedings (!); if applicable, this information must be included in the cover letter
- Clarivate Analytics does not examine whether contributions are peer-reviewed, but it may request information about peer review
- Often the emphasis is on the first impression of the proceedings
Content requirements
- Presenting significant and high quality results of current research
- Content contribution to WoS, to the field, to the region
- Priority is given to:
- recurring conferences, but they don't always have a guarantee of acceptance (!)
- conferences sponsored by prestigious scientific societies
- Emphasis is also placed on quality references
Further information
- For technical and natural sciences, only proceedings that are no more than 4 years old are evaluated!
- The proceedings must contain information about the conference - location and date of the conference!
- Online proceedings or printed proceedings are preferred; proceedings on a CD are not accepted. PDF files must not be locked (Clarivate Analytics cannot process locked files)
- The evaluation of proceedings takes place on a continuous basis, the deadline for the evaluation is up to 6 months (in our experience it is usually longer, up to 1–1.5 years)
- If a manuscript is not rejected and does not fit into the quota for that year, it is forwarded for consideration in the following year
